Books to Bars is Southern Ontario’s books to prisoners program. We are dedicated to promoting literacy, creativity, and functionality within the correctional system. Collecting literature donated by community members we organize, package and deliver donations of anywhere from 100-450 books to nearly a dozen remands, detention centres and prisons.
The Need
There is a severe shortage of reading material available to Ontario’s incarcerated, and this is due to lack of funding. Library funding in corrections was cut over 10 years ago and has not been replenished.
The importance of reading cannot be overlooked to any human being, and we are dedicated to promoting literacy and creativity in the correctional system, by restoring and replenishing the diminished sources of books available to those incarcerated.
Frequent reading of diverse material stimulates critical thinking, improved reading and writing skills, and a general confidence vital to healthy rehabilitation.
About the Organization
Books to Bars is based out of Hamilton, Ontario. Due to the extreme need for literature available to Ontario’s incarcerated Books to Bars now collects reading material in not only the greater Hamilton-Wentworth, but throughout Kitchener Ontario, as well as London Ontario. Books to Bars is a 100% volunteer based organization and our service would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers continual support, and all of our communities generous donations. Together more people incarcerated have access to proper reading material than we have seen in over 10 years in Ontario. We wish to thank all involved from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
Please read through our site on where and how you can donate, and for more information on how yo u can become involved. Thank You. ~B2B
